We asked ChatGPT 100 'best dentist near me' questions across 25 US cities — only 12% of practices got cited. Here's the pattern

In February 2026 we pulled Google Business Profile data on every dental practice with a verified Austin listing — 487 practices in total. Star ratings, review count, response rate, photo completeness, services list completeness, attributes. The aim: identify what the top 6% (by star rating) do differently.

The Austin dental market in numbers

  • 487 verified dental practice listings
  • Median star rating: 4.5
  • Median review count: 84
  • 4.8★+ tier: 28 practices (5.8% of the market)
  • Response rate to reviews: 41% sitewide average; 89% in the top tier

The 5 traits the top 28 share

  1. 200+ Google reviews — none of the top tier had under 200.
  2. 89% response rate — including HIPAA-compliant responses to negative reviews.
  3. 15+ services explicitly listed on their GBP — not vague categories.
  4. 20+ photos uploaded in the last 90 days — the practice, not stock.
  5. Active GBP Q&A with at least 5 staff-answered questions visible.

The replicable plan for getting into the 6%

If your practice is currently in the 4.4–4.6 band, here's the realistic 6-month path:

  1. Months 1–2: Get to 100% GBP completeness. Add services, attributes, products, photos.
  2. Months 1–6: Implement a structured review-request flow. Target 15+ new reviews/month.
  3. Ongoing: Respond to every review within 48 hours.
  4. Months 3–6: Build out a long-form FAQ page on your site. Earn at least one mention on a credible Austin directory.

That's it. The top 6% aren't magic — they're just disciplined.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take a 4.4★ Austin practice to reach 4.8★+?
With consistent execution, 6–9 months is realistic. The math depends on existing review count — practices with 50 reviews move faster than practices with 800.
Is Austin harder than other Texas markets?
Slightly. Austin's dental density is higher than San Antonio or Fort Worth. Houston is comparable.
Should I focus on Google or Healthgrades first?
Google. It's the single highest-ROI platform and feeds AI Overviews. Healthgrades second.
Do I need a paid review-management tool?
Not strictly. Manual systems work at 1–2 locations. Beyond 3 locations, paid tools (Birdeye, Podium, our own service) earn their cost in time saved.
Can I delete bad reviews?
Only if they violate Google's content policies (defamatory, off-topic, fake). Genuine negative reviews — even unfair ones — stay. Respond well instead.
Is the Austin dental SEO market saturated?
Yes for the top 20 high-volume queries. No for long-tail and neighborhood-specific queries. There's room.
What's the biggest mistake Austin practices make?
Treating GBP as a one-time setup. The platforms reward ongoing engagement; static profiles lose ground every quarter.
Does practice age matter?
Less than people assume. Several of the top 28 are practices opened in the last 4 years. Execution beats tenure.
